This unit lost it track, but got a hover package (so always stable when firing)

less hover tank, more hover artillery/sniper.

dont ask me what that looks like. we are on the right track.. but its still off.

Perhaps some sort of track showing where the main gun can swivel up and down for aiming purposes? Might making it seem more like a ranged weapon and less like a tank with a fixed range :)

I was trying to say that adding something like the light gray part (which is where the barrel swivels up and down) might make it more obvious that the unit is ranged :)
